Convert JPG to PNG and many more file formats with File Converter

File Converter is one of those glorious pieces of software that once you discover you cannot stop using forever and ever. Not for nothing is it one of the best free programs that we have discovered on Genbeta and Webedia so far this year.

As its name implies, and although it sounds extremely generic, it is a file converter. The difference between File Converter and the bunch of Google results that are likely to appear if you search for things like “convert JPG to PNG” or “convert DOC to PDF” is in their quality, efficiency, and absence of garbage.

Open source, free and with support for a huge list of formats

File Converter is an application for Windows, it’s free, it’s open source, and you can view the source code on GitHub. When installed, it will become part of the contextual menu of Windows File Explorer and from there it will offer you its magic.

This means that any compatible file that you have in the folders of your computer can be quickly converted to another format by simply right clicking on it.

For example, if you want to convert an image, you just have to right click on it, choose File Converter in the context menu of the explorer and then choose the format in the drop-down options:

When you choose to convert a file with File Converter, a pop-up window will appear showing the progress and will automatically close upon completion. The output file will immediately appear in the same folder as the original file and both will be preserved.

You can convert multiple files at the same time regardless of whether they are different input formats, as long as the output is the same. The tool is extremely fast, easy to use, and highly configurable.

If you don’t see the format you need in the menu, you can configure the presets by choosing “Configure presets” from the File Converter context menu. There you can add or remove available formats.

Each format offers individual settings and you can set things like the quality of the file you get when converting, or even the actions carried out after converting, such as moving the original file to a folder, deleting it, or doing nothing.

You can configure File Converter so that it only offers to convert to the formats you use the most, and you can choose its place in the list so that your favorites take priority. Overall this tool works like a charm, and it does not include strange installers with adware, crapware or malware.
